Alright Guys and Gals, you get a new taste of the And So It Is crew. We have a lot of laughs and anger on this one. Once again, please send your comments, that way we can improve on everything we do. Also, we'll try to get a poll up to see what the public thinks of the argument.

1. At 10:18 minutes Chris is actually defining an architect / engineer - members of society that have been able to create marvelous pieces of construction out of nothing.
ReplyDelete2. Perhaps this argument would be better served with the question of the Medical Doctor vs. an Engineer - both are higher educated people than the average construction worker.
3. Frank: What the hell is a "cross-section of America"....stop mixing jargon from various fields into everyday conversation!
4. Chris: Define the "best fucking shelter in a post apocalyptic world." Are you assuming that that one construction worker is capable of providing an enclosed space complete with electricity, plumbing, and ventilation?
5. Pablo: Yes we do have to define the post apocalyptic world: is it Terminator post apocalyptic? is it Independence Day post apocalyptic? is it Resident Evil post apocalyptic? C'mon man!
6. I for one would pick the Doctor. If you could only pick one individual, and not a team of construction workers or doctors, (which is how I understand the question posed), the doctor is a more educated, reasoned, wise, well rounded member of society who could also prove more useful as a member of a post-apocalyptic council. The new society could learn basic construction techniques through trial and error, but you wouldn't be able to afford performing any kind of surgery or diagnosis through trial and error.
7. Let the record show that even the 2 architects of this group chose the doctor.
8. What if aliens invaded a haunted house?
I would choose doctor initially, assuming that there's widespread damage everywhere. Considering multiple scales of coverage, an experienced construction worker can come later, in the sense that he can manage building a larger scale structure to house a larger number of people, etc. - better facilities basically. But I'm not gona need to build something much better than a firm foundation and sturdy support for a roof. I agree, shelter starts to be about comfort, if built by a construction worker. A doctor will know peoples' basic needs better, and what the minimal requirements for a shelter will be. Bringing in an experienced builder over a doctor of equal caliber seems impersonal.
ReplyDelete-Architect (so make that 3 architects)
While you all make VERY good points, I think that a doctor can build a shack but a construction worker can't pull out your appendix successfully. BTW in the Dark Ages, there was no advancement of art, technology, or science THAT WAS DOCUMENTED. This doesn't mean that it didn't happen. However, medical treatment was usually left to Alchemists and Monks, who did continue the study of science and the human body.
ReplyDeleteAnd Tom Hanks in "Cast Away" nearly died from a tooth infection until he performed some oral surgery with a freakin' figure skate! I bet he would have loved to have a doctor.
The cross-section idea really complicated the argument. Perhaps the argument would be better if you had neither in your village.
Question
ReplyDeleteSo... if each of you had to choose one friend from among your group, replacing the construction worker and the doctor, to join you, knowing their abilities who would each of you pick? Or you could rank each person from highest priority to lowest instead so that no one is left out. But I'm hoping no one will always be in the bottom so it will not cause any strife.. or maybe they can argue their way to the top of your list??
If this were Noah's Ark, all of you would have been voted off, and then replaced with construction workers and doctors.
